Al-Aqsa Mosque in Danger
Israel forces entered the Al-Aqsa Mosquetoday clashing with Palestinian youth in Friday prayer. AFP reports injured on both sides in a battle that is still underway.
March 5th 2010 Israeli-Palestinian fighting is likely a result of Israel’s latest attempt to annex more of East-Jerusalem and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's decision to include two more sites in the occupied West  Bank on a list of Israeli heritage sites.
Israel defied the U.S. government urges to stop the settlement expansion and instead it has annexed further territories, especially in Jerusalem.
Official Israeli police sources blame the Palestinians who disrupted Jews praying at theWestern Wall and threw stones. Palestinian sources dispute those allegations, saying that the Israeli government provoked Muslims and instigated the latest unrest.
Jewish and Islami Holy Sites in Jerusalem
The Al-Aqsa mosque compound is Islam's third holiest site, after Mecca and Medina. Muslims refer to it as the Al-Haram Al-Sharif and believe it to be the place where the Prophet Mohammed made a night journey to heaven on horseback.
The Al-Aqsa mosque is below Temple Mount, the holiest site in the world for Jews, who believe it was the location of the Second Temple, torched by the Romans in 70 AD.
This last incident comes after days of clashes in the West Bank town of Hebron over an Israeli plan to renovate the Tomb of the Patriarchs there, another ancient site revered by Jews and Muslims and announced by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for annex.
